- Hockley is a large, well-served village in south east Essex between Chelmsford and Southend-on-Sea. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book; however, is thought to have earlier origins following the discovery of a Roman coin and Saxon pottery within the burial mound, Plumberouw Mount. Also of note within the village is the historic church of St. Peter and Paul dating from the medieval and possibly Norman period. The 280 acre ancient Hockley woods, now a Nature Reserve and protected as a site of Special Scientific Interest, are within 150 yards as the crow flies.
